Abstract

The chemical composition and chemical state of some elements in atmospheric deposition particles have been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the surface of atmospheric deposition particles contains crustal elements such as Al, Ca and Si and light elements such as C, N, and O. The atomic number fraction of Al, Si, and Ca (up to 16.4%) indicates that the settlement process of atmospheric particles is concomitant with the accumulation of crustal elements. The atomic number fraction ratio of S and N is close to 1, suggesting that there is insufficient alkaline NH3 to neutralize acidic SO42- and the surface of the deposition particles is acidic. High resolution XPS showed that organic hydrocarbons are the dominant carbon species in atmospheric deposition particles, and a small amount of amorphous carbon was also found; In addition, nitrogen occurs as inorganic nitrogen, which is mainly NOx and NH4+, and as organic nitrogen, which is mainly pyridine nitrogen.
