Acidichromism in the Langmuir-Blodgett films of an amphiphilic azo-containing naphthol derivative

Abstract

An amphiphilic azo-containing naphthol derivative, 4-(4′-hexadecyloxy phenylazo)-1-naphthol (C16AzoNp) was synthesized. It is found that C16AzoNp can form a stable monolayer on water surface. The monolayer can be transferred onto solid substrates to form LB films. Acidichromism was observed in the deposited LB film, i.e. the film turned its color from yellow to purple upon exposing to HCl gas and the color could be returned to its original upon exposing to NH 3 gas.
