Abstract

Cross-linked copolymeric microspheres of maleic anhydride and α-methyl styrene (PAMSM) have been prepared by self-stable precipitation polymerization. The influence of varying the type and amount of cross-linker on the morphology, size and size distribution of the microspheres was investigated. The use of divinylbenzene (DVB) as a cross-linker had a negligible influence on the morphology, size and size distribution of the polymer microspheres. The size and size distribution of the polymer microspheres increased on addition of increasing amounts of ethyleneglycol dimethyacrylate (EGDMA) and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA). The cross-linking degree of the microspheres can be tuned by varying the amount of cross-linker added, and the distribution became broad when large amounts of EGDMA and TMPTMA were employed as cross-linkers. According to the thermal analysis results, the cross-linker could improve the Tg of PAMSM due to the change in the chemical structure of the polymer chain, but did not change the thermal stability of PAMSM.
