Abstract

Nylon 6 and polypyrrole as matrices and graphite oxide as a filler have been used to fabricate nylon 6-graphite oxide and polypyrrole-graphite oxide composites by in situ polymerization. Nylon 6 was transformed from an insulator into a semiconductor, since graphite oxide underwent reduction to become a conducting filler in nylon 6. The thermoelectric performance of nylon 6 was greatly enhanced, with a maximum value-of-merit of 9.45 × 10-6. Graphite oxide acted as a template inducing the alignment and ordered accumulation of the polypyrrole molecular chains during polymerization, leading to enhanced thermoelectric performance. The maximum electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient reached 6056S/m and 9.85μV/K-1, respectively. The maximum thermoelectric figure of merit was 6.89 × 10-4.
