Radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of 1,1-diphenylethylene

Abstract

The radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE) has been investigated. The results showed that the polymerization possesses characteristics of living polymerization to some extent: the molecular weight of the polymer increased with the increasing extent of monomer conversion and the molecular weight distribution was narrow, and both the conversion of monomer at a given time and the molecular weight of the polymer at a given monomer conversion decreased with increasing amount of DPE. 1H-NMR spectroscopy and ESI-MS mass spectrometry showed that DPE is incorporated into the polymer chain mainly as a single DPE unit, which arises from coupling termination between DPE end chain radicals and PMMA chain radicals.
