Synthesis of amino end-functionalized polymers via atom transfer radical polymerization

Abstract

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate initiated by
p-nitrobenzyl α-bromoisobutylate and ATRP of styrene initiated by 4-nitrobenzyl bromide were carried out using CuBr/2,2'-bipyridine as catalyst system. It was found that controlled radical polymerization processes were involved in both of the reactions. The resulting polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) with terminal nitro-groups had narrow molecular weight distributions. The terminal nitro-groups of the polymers were converted to amino-groups through reduction in acetone with Fe and hydrochloric acid.
