Performance of free radical/cationic hybrid UVcured powder coating systems

Abstract

UVcured hybrid powder systems have been prepared using acrylate and epoxy resi n as the main starting materials with the addition of a cationic photoinitiator Ar2I+SbF-6, a free radical photoinitiator Irgacure 2959 and promoters. T he absorption spectra of the photoinitiators were obtained by UVVis spectropho tometry. The conversions in different curing systems were compared by FTIR and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) weight loss and the thermal stabilities w ere investigated by TG. The effect of varying exposure time and amount of photoi nitiator on the curing properties of the hybrid system were investigated and the mechanical properties of the resulting cured films were also measured. The resu lts showed that the best cured film was obtained with 2% of photoinitiator and e xposure for 80?s. The gel content of the resulting hybrid system was 87.7%, an d its flexibility was 2?mm, impact resistance 40kg·cm, hardness 3H, and ad hesion grade 0. The thermal stability and mechanical properties of the hybrid fi lm were superior to those of the cationic film. 
