Preparation of red/white electronic ink microcapsules

Abstract

Functional gelatincarboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) microcapsules containing a red /white electrophoretic suspension have been prepared using a complex coacervatio n method. The optimized experimental conditions were identified. The results sho wed when the volume ratio of gelatin and CMC was 5∶1, the amount of surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was 1.3-1.7g/L, the reaction temperature was 4.0℃, the stirring speed was 600-800r/min, and the pH was 3.5-3.8, narrow size distributions of microcapsules with transparent surfaces were obtained. Su ch microcapsules containing the red/white suspension showed a response time of 1.4s in electrophoretic displays with a direct current electric field.
