
Crosslinking of hyaluronic acid by γ-irradiation

Crosslinking of hyaluronic acid by γ-irradiation
In order to develop crosslinked hyaluronic acid (HA), modified HA was subjected to γ-irradiation. Methacrylate groups were first grafted onto the HA to yield glycidyl methacrylateHA (GMHA) conjugates, which were treated by γ-irradiation with varying dosages, whilst varying the concentration of GMHA, and molecular weights. The results revealed that the swelling ratio of the HA gels decreased when the molecular weights increased from 100000 to 1000000, and decreased markedly with the reduction in the concentration of GMHA, and that when the mass fraction of GMHA was increased from 1% to 15%, the swelling ratio of the HA decreased from 150?g/g to 20?g/g. The extent of crosslinking increased with increasing γ-ray dosage. This method provides a new way to obtain HA with controlled crosslinking.
