Study of pre-oxidation processes in PAN fibers with varying fineness

Abstract

The reaction, as well as the crystal and core-shell structure evolution, of PAN fibers with varying fineness has been studied during pre-oxidation by a combination of FT-IR, DSC, and XRD measurements and traditional methods, such as density and core-shell structure testing methods. The results show that during the latter stages of pre-oxidation at a given temperature, more oxidation occurs in fibers with smaller fineness. Fibers with smaller fineness possess higher relative cyclization degrees, densities and smaller cores, which promotes the formation of a uniform structure.
