TEM observation of dislocation emissionand nano-crack nucleation
In-situ TEM observation was carried out on an austenitic stainless steel. Dislocation emission from the crack tip, formation of dislocation-free zones, nucleation of nano-cracks and dislocation pile-ups were all observed. The shape of the dislocation-free zone was clear and consistent with results of theoretical calculations. Nucleation and growth of nano-cracks in the dislocation-free zone verified that the crack growth mechanism involves micro-crack coalescence.
