Abstract

A theoretical equation for determining the mass transfer coefficient (K) for removal of ammonia in water by vacuum membrane distillation has been derived. In addition, the influence of feed temperature, feed concentration and the pH value of the feed on K was investigated. It was found that K can be greatly enhanced by increasing the feed temperature or the pH value of the feed, but the value of K tends to plateau when the pH value of the feed is higher than 11.0. The initial concentration of the feed had little influence on K within the range of the experiments. The total mass transfer coefficients predicted by the equation derived agree well with those measured experimentally.
