A multilayer construction has been fabricated on a bi-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) surface via a chemical bonding assembly process. The first step in the fabrication process involves the introduction of semipinacol groups onto the BOPP surface by hydrogen abstraction by benzophenone (BP) and coupling of the resultant semipinacol radicals with the surface under UV irradiation. The second step involves a condensation reaction between the hydroxyl group of the semipinacol moiety and terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) followed by successive condensation reactions of bis-phenol A (BPA) and TPC. The formation of the assembled film can be conveniently monitored by UV spectroscopy and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.
