Study of the synthesis of tetraphenol ethane by liquid chromatogram and mass chromatogram (LC-MS)

The condensation reaction of phenol and glyoxal has been carried out using isopropyl alcohol as solvent in the presence of No.732 cationic exchange resin as catalyst. The factors affecting the yield of tetraphenol ethane were studied, and an effective methodology to determine the yield was developed using a combination of high performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. With this method, the effect of varying the ratio of phenol and glyoxal and the reaction time on the ultimate yield were clarified. The results showed that when the concentration of phenol was increased, the yield of tetraphenol ethane initially increased and then decreased. The maximum yield of 31.14% (at a reaction time of 8.h) was reached when the amount of substance ratio of phenol and glyoxal was 15∶1 The yield increased gradually with increasing reaction time, and reached 78.80% after 32h.
